Forts, Foraging, Fishing, Nostalgia & Outrage - Being A 1980's Kid
Sunday Apr 30, 2017

In July 2014, South Carolina mother Debra Harrell was arrested for allowing her 9-year-old daughter to play at a popular park unattended while she was at work. The media rhetoric trended toward a portrayal of Debra Harrell as, at least, a parent who exercised poor judgment. Ms. Harrell’s actions, placed in the context that her child was at a well-attended park, provided a cell phone, and enjoying the environment, seems like something that wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow in, let’s say, 1974. ARE WE CREATING NATURE-DEPRIVED, PHOBIA-PRONE KIDS? Other articles and studies concur that today’s children do not enjoy the freedom of previous generations – and the effects are not making kid’s safer, but are actually destroying children’s coupling with nature and that deprivation is placing them at increased risks for depression and anxiety. 50X DECREASE IN ROAMING RANGE IN 88 YEARS. In his article, How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Four Generations, (2007), David Derbyshire described the shrinking “roaming range” afforded to children over the past century. Mr. Derbyshire examined one family and explained the unsupervised “roaming zones” granted of each family member when that person was age 8. Great grandfather George was allowed to walk six miles to go fishing in 1919. A map of his “free range” (in the YouTube version and this podcast) represents about 30 square miles. Grandfather Jack, in 1950, walked about one mile in his own woods. Mother Vickie, in 1979, was allowed to walk alone to her community pool about a half-mile away. In 2007, son Ed, was able to walk 900 feet (.18 square miles) to the end of his street. THE SHORTENING LEASH. Six thousand respondents to online magazine SLATE’s (Jessica Grose & Hann Rosin, 2014) survey produced a clear trend that kids today have a lot less freedom than their parents did. For example, in 1940, most children were allowed to walk 1-5 miles from home alone in 2nd or 3rd grade. In 1990, most children were allowed to walk 1-5 miles from home alone in middle school! THE OVERPROTECTED KID (The Atlantic, April 2014). The article offers numerous examples from field experts converging on the position that by engaging in risky play, children are effectively subjecting themselves to a form of exposure therapy, in which they force themselves to do the thing they’re afraid of in order to overcome their fear. But if they never go through the process, the fear can turn into a phobia. DAVID’S ADVENTUROUS 1980’s CHILDHOOD. David describes a pre-cell phone era of biking his town without boundaries, when a noon whistle, wristwatch and streetlamps marked his schedule, the value in making forts, fishing along a brisk river with a friend, and running the mossy trails of the monastery at the edge of town. In the summer of 2016, David Perrodin “The Safety Doc” and Pulitzer-Prize winning author/producer David Obst toppled the established rhetoric narrative of school intruder cinema by writing a school intruder film based upon how most school intruder situations empirically complete – without harm to self or others. THE ICONIC DAVID OBST. Obst, a legendary American literary legend that was the agent for Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, also produced the blockbuster hit movies Revenge of the Nerds, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Sean Penn’s breakout role), and All the President’s men. Obst received the Pulitzer Prize for breaking the My Lai massacre story (Vietnam) with investigative news reporter Seymour Hersh. SEEKING A CONTENT EXPERT. The grapevine of connections put Dr. Perrodin’s name before David Obst at a time when Obst was seeking a school safety content expert for a school intruder film. Perrodin’s role quickly expanded from reviewing the accuracy of a handful of scenes to co-authoring, and eventually co-directing, scenes with David Obst. CRASH COURSE IN FILM. Dr. Perrodin had to quickly learn the lingo, format and nuances of the movie industry as he and Obst aimed to have a completed 120-page script in 8 weeks. In this episode, Dr. Perrodin shares feeling overwhelmed and the unrelenting need to anchor his recommendations to empirical findings – something that wasn’t required by David Obst who repeatedly stated, “Dr. Perrodin, you are the expert – you don’t need to tell me why, you need to tell me what would happen during a scene.” Oh yeah, what’s a slug line? Anyway, some habits are hard to break for a social scientist who is also a safety expert. Dr. Perrodin also emphasized the benefit of voice-overs, or actors’ thoughts being shared out loud, as a way to increase the accessibility of the film to persons with visual disabilities. The film maximized the sensemaking framework, or placing emphasis on identifying very subtle changes in one’s environment and how to assess context and situation before determining options. Bucking the trend of school intruder films, nobody was shot or killed and profanity was not incorporated into the script. FAST FACT: One page of script equals approximately 1-minute of screen time. CAPTURED! A Look Back At The Bizarre Unraveling Of The Wisconsin Manhunt
Sunday Apr 16, 2017
Sunday Apr 16, 2017
One of the Midwest’s largest manhunts ended peacefully at a makeshift campsite in a remote area of Wisconsin farmland. Joseph Jakubowski, a Janesville, Wisconsin man accused of sending President Donald Trump a 161-page anti-government and anti-religious manifesto was uneventfully captured by law enforcement on the morning of April 14, 2017. BIZARRE DECISION BY FUGITIVE. When a farmer, who was a retired school counselor, discovered a man camping on the distal fringe of his property, he engaged in a ‘cordial’ hour with him that included a request for the uninvited camper to move from the farmer’s property. At this point, Jakubowski refused to move his camp. Really? It’s unclear as to his justification or why the fugitive simply didn’t feign making a simple oversight in choosing his camping spot. After holding to his property claim, Jakubowski likely expected that the farmer would report him - so was Jakubowski ready for confrontation or prepared to surrender? THREE TYPES OF PUBLIC REACTION. Per the posts left under my own social media and reading other users’ posts about the matter to various discussion threads, it was clear that those posting about the manhunt evenly fell into one of three very distinct categories: (1) Supporters of Jakubowski’s beliefs, (2) People grasping for any information about the manhunt, and (3) Backers of law enforcement and a peaceful society. AWARENESS FADES. It was evident that life was returning to a normal routine for most Wisconsinites as the manhunt exceeded a week. Some events were canceled and overall security was heightened, but this was nothing like the lockdown of an entire region that we observed 4 years ago following the Boston Marathon bombing. Why? FALSE FLAGS. FBI profilers publicly stated that Jakubowski was likely heading East (to Washington DC) and that he might be working with a support network. Yet, he was found 2 hours from his home and presumably never left Wisconsin. Did profilers purposely stir misinformation into the media streams believing that it would eventually reach Jakubowski and either direct his next steps or cause him to lower his guard? I wrote several posts stating I felt he didn’t leave the state and that he was primarily seeking affirmation via his manifesto and subsequent letter to a TV station. Ultimately, it appears he wanted his beliefs to be acknowledged and not to deliver dark justice. We can all be thankful that one of the charges against him will trespassing in rural Vernon County. By the way, profiling is an imprecise endeavor - Google search “Mary Jane Moore”. FORMATS. My Life In The Midst Of A Manhunt - Navigating Armageddon
Monday Apr 10, 2017
Monday Apr 10, 2017
David gives a vibrant inside-perspective of how he was literally at the center of what has unfolded into one of the largest manhunts in the Midwest. Admittedly, the first step is to consider the campus unsecure until we’ve walked the grounds, pulled each door handle, and then do it all over again. I’m fortunate to work with a leader that “gets” environmental security. JANESVILLE (Wis) MANHUNT. Officers are looking for a Joseph A. Jakubowski, a 32-year-old man who’s considered armed and dangerous said he sent a 161-page manifesto to President Trump. Jakubowski is wanted in connection with the theft of guns from the Armageddon gun and ammo shop. A car registered to Jakubowski was found burned nearby, and he's suspected in the arson, officials said. A quick review of the Wisconsin Circuit Court online records search reveals that Joseph Jakubowski has been charged or ticketed 32 times since 2001. The sheriff's office said it learned Thursday that he had made threats to steal weapons and use them against public officials or at an unspecified school. However, it was now mid-morning, and most school shooting occur at the start of the school day. This was favorable news for area schools, many which were in lockdown or had cancelled outdoor events. AFFIRMATION-SEEKING. A February, 2013 article titled: The Final Word: Why Killers Write Manifestos, Marc Lallanilla of Live Science Contributor wrote: "All of these people think they've been wronged," said David A. Clayman, Ph.D., a clinical and forensic psychologist. "These people collect wrongs and they seek out affirmation of their righteousness," said Clayman. "They saw the world as against them. The common theme is a grudge." Look for this in Joseph Jakubowski. He even had a friend film him applying postage stamps to his manifesto and depositing it to the mail receptacle – not to mention a recent YouTube rant referenced, but removed from public view. LINGERING QUESTIONS. As this manhunt drags on, people will ease their guards. You won’t hear people asking about targets as it seems that this man had opportunities and didn’t act upon them. Perhaps he really wanted to be heard. Still this probably won’t end well. An armed and dangerous man is being pursued. He has a history of no regard for authority, is a loner, and certainly realizes that capture means living out his years in prison. ADVICE. I urge you to be aware of your environment and changes in your environment. Just because a threat now seems dissipated or distant doesn’t mean that a police pursuit won’t bring the chaos to your street. Also, harden your own targets by locking doors and leaving lights on at night until this matter has been resolved. FORMATS. Logotherapy & Reclaiming Youth From The Existential Vacuum
Sunday Apr 02, 2017
Sunday Apr 02, 2017
Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy is a relevant framework and also a confusing term as it makes one think of branding and not the Greek word logos, which is “meaning”. In this podcast, I share why it is important to make youth aware of Logotherapy as a perspective to counter the growing rhetoric of determinism and The Butterfly Effect that are eroding belief in free will and therefore distancing people from a sense of control over self or environment. Such disempowerment, I believe, destroys agency and purpose and therefore contributes to personal anxieties, depression and an overall ability to set goals and live a non-centric lifestyle. Perspective taking is a deficit in today’s youth that are IV hooked to the steady drip of social media affirmation. A quick search in jurn.org will discover countless studies of the negative relationships between youth (and all adult) mental health and addiction to social media applications. I believe that Logotherapy should be taught to all youth. WHO WAS VIKTOR FRANKL? Viktor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychologist who founded what he called the field of “Logotherapy”, which has been dubbed the “Third Viennese School of Psychology” (following Freud and Alder). Logotherapy developed in and through Frankl’s personal experience in the Nazi concentration camp. The years spent there deeply affected his understanding of reality and the meaning of human life. His most popular book, Man’s Search for Meaning, chronicles his experience in the camp as well as the development of Logotherapy. During his time there, he found that those around him who did not lose their sense of purpose and meaning in life were able to survive much longer than those who had lost their way. MAN’S SEARCH FOR MEANING. Dr. Perrodin provides several chilling, yet reflective accounts from Frankl’s hallmark book. For example, Dr. Frankl cautioned that a prisoner was never awoken from a nightmare as the reality of life in the camp was certainly worse than anything conjured in the mind. He also talked of how he volunteered to care for typhus patients, although such an act very well could have brought upon his own physical demise. WHAT IS LOGOTHERAPY? It is loosely interpreted as therapy through finding meaning as “logos” translates to “meaning” in Greek. However, Dr. Perrodin explains why he interprets Logotherapy as less of a therapy and more of a framework. Logotherapy has 3 basic assumptions (1) Life has meaning under all circumstances (2) People have a will to meaning (3) People have freedom under all circumstances to activate the will to meaning and to find meaning. EXISTENTIAL VACUUM. Frankl’s way to describe life that has no meaning and this perpetual condition creates a void that we aim to satiate with drugs, violence, food, and other vices, such as modern-day social media -- yet the void will be a black hole and we will be forced to intellectually reason with our purpose to live or to die.
